24/3/17 New Release Roundup

Singles

Gorillaz:

Saturnz Barz ft. Popcaan – Even with Jamaican singer Popcaan taking the vocal reins for most of this track, this is classic Gorillaz. 83%

Andromeda ft. D.R.A.M – My favourite of the 4 tracks, Andromeda features some great, melancholic vocals from 2D and D.R.A.M. 92%

Ascension ft.Vince Staples – With a great, hard hitting verses from from Californian rapper Vince Staples, Ascension sounds bang up to date, but could still fit in on older Gorillaz albums. 86%

We Got The Power ft. Jehnny Beth – We Got The Power features Jehnny Beth of Savages, as well as Noel Gallagher on backing vocals and is the most upbeat of the 4 tracks released so far. 85%

Kendrick Lamar: The Heart Part 4 – A great surprise release from Kendrick, with politically charged lyrics directly targeting ‘chump’ Donald Trump. 88%

London Grammar: Truth is a Beautiful Thing – More of the same from London Grammar, Hannah Reid has a very nice voice but this track doesn’t really go anywhere & isn’t at all memorable. 30%

Alma: Chasing Highs – Sounds like someone trying to copy Mø but a lot worse. 15%

Zayn & Partynextdoor: Still Got Time – A pleasant, summery track from Zayn and producer/rapper Partynextdoor, with his production working very well with Zayn’s vocals. 68%

Igloo Areola – Laughable rap verses over a dull dubstep beat makes for another annoying track from Iguana America. 10%

Albums/EPs

Lewis Watson: midnight – The second album from singer-songwriter Lewis Watson is a collection of pleasant indie-folk tracks, with opening track ‘maybe we’re home’ being my favourite. 70%

Take That: Wonderland – A strange mix of disco, rock and electro-pop that doesn’t really make a coherent album. 30%

The Magic Gang: EP Three – Another tasty slice of indie from The Magic Gang, with opening track ‘Hotel Apathy’ reminding me of Teenage Fanclub. 75%

Kelly Lee Owens: Kelly Lee Owens – An interesting, minimalist electronic album from North Wales based Kelly Lee Owens, including a collab with Jenny Hval. Not heard anything by her before this album but I will make sure to from now on. 80%
